Computer desks are something that are not only aesthetically pleasing but are very important for our comfort. Believe me I have been through many different styles and types throughout the past few years and have struggled to find just the right fit for me. We look at our personal computer desk as it is something that represents us. As people we seem to acquire a habit and take on our surroundings which is no different with our computers desks. We create a personal space that we customize and fine-tune to our specific needs. In a recent human environment and inhabitant study in 2002, the average person spends 35% of their time at home and 72% of their time at work, behind computer desk furniture. This is where the importance of computer desks comes into play. We need to make sure that the daily tools that we use are comfortable and fit our body size accordingly. It is important for us to get a work space that is not only functional but one we can work with for long periods of time before we go out and buy any computer desk.

Room Design

One thing to think about is room design. Many interior designers and architects alike focus on what rooms and spaces will look like as well as the feel to the user.  99.99% of the time this feel all comes from our visual sense. This has a direct relationship to our comfort level within a space. Everything has to flow and must harmonize with everything else in the room. This puts a strong emphasis on the appearance of computer desks. In most office and home situations the desk is seen as a focal point of the room. By doing this the look of the computer desk or computer desks in the room must have an attractive appearance and still provide all the needs the user will require. One thing that many people make the mistake in doing is deciding on a desk based on looks alone. This is a HUGE mistake. I have found that every desk that I have bought in the past was purchased based on this fact alone.  In turn, I have discovered the majority of ascetically pleasing desks like a glass computer desk, do not take functionality or comfort into consideration. Room design and look should not be the most important driving force when deciding on computer desks.

Styles

Another thing to think about is what style you want. This is directly related to look but again should not be the most important factor. With people putting the importance on appearance computer desks are designed with numerous styles available. Today there are hundreds of styles made to accommodate thousands of different uses. Styles like:

A Glass Computer Desk

Corner computer desks

L-shaped desks

U-shaped desks

Computer Armoire desks

Computer cart desks

Laptop desks

The good news is that from home, to commercial use the technology is being used more and more in the desk industry to help with looks, ergonomics, all paired with styling as seen in this video.

This allows for a new wave of desk. More versatile and functional so that we invest in a desk it can change as our needs change. This is something to think about strongly when you get ready to purchase a desk. What will your computer desk be used for five years from now?

Ergonomics

This is something that is not apparent to our comfort level but something that we actually physically feel. In short ergonomics is:

The design and positioning of your computer desk environment to maximize the human bodies well being all in the efforts to prevent bodily injuries from long term stationary positions.

It is so important to have the proper ergonomics set up for your height, weight and body type. The type of computer desks used that you will inhabit for long periods of time can either make or break this guideline. Computer desks and chairs are the number one contributor to problems with: posture, flexibility, muscle strain, back pain, poor blood circulation, neck stiffness, and joint pressure and strain in the (shoulder, writs, elbow, and knees). All of these factors need to be taken into consideration when it comes time to decide on your new computer desk. It is very important to make sure that the visual attraction of this piece of furniture does not overpower your decision in the proper desk for your personal use.

Back To Basics

Most people avoid any possible injury by not getting wrapped up in what the visual aspects of the computer desks are, by staying true to a basic four legged flat desks with an adjustable comfortable chair. This doesn’t mean that the desks can't be visually appealing you just need to find one that fits your style and is still simple. A simplistic desk is key. I have found that with proper stretching, breaks taken, and proper eye level adjustments made to your computer monitor; all stain and pains can be simply avoided. You do not need anything fancy or a special ergonomically designed work station (which can get very pricey fast) if you just stick to basics you will not have any problems. I have spend way too much money figuring this out for myself and I hope you keep all of this in mind when shopping for computer desk. If you put some thought into your wants and functional needs of your new computer desk so that you get the most out of your work environment you will be able to utilize it for years to come.
